Pastel Spring Garden Wedding at Gilbertsville Farmhouse
This spring wedding at Gilbertsville Farmhouse felt like a cutting garden that had wandered into the barn. Gilbertsville Farmhouse is a 125-acre private estate in South New Berlin, in upstate New York, about three and a half hours from Manhattan. Outside, sheep grazed along the white fence and an old tree leaned over the drive; inside, crystal chandeliers hung beneath a canopy of bistro lights. The palette moved from blush and raspberry through lavender and soft cornflower blue, with bursts of butter yellow, so every few feet down the long farm tables the color shifted a little, the way a garden border does.
Floraland Weddings & Events handled the floral design and overall design direction, from the color story to how each table was layered. Tulips, delphinium, garden roses and stock did most of the talking, set low in clusters of bud vases and compotes, with pink and pale blue tapers rising between them. The inspiration was the barn itself: dark wood, warm light and a lot of height overhead, so we kept the arrangements loose and airy rather than dense.
Flower list and palette
Tulips in pink and butter yellow
Delphinium in lavender and cornflower blue
Garden roses in blush and raspberry
Stock in soft lilac and white
Taper candles in pink and pale blue
Palette: blush, raspberry, lavender, cornflower blue and butter yellow against dark barn wood
Design tip
For a long-table reception, keep centerpieces below eye level and let taper candles carry the height, so guests can talk across the table and the room itself stays in view.
Frequently asked questions
What flowers are in season for a spring wedding in New York?
Tulips, ranunculus, anemones, daffodils, hyacinth, lilac, sweet peas and early peonies are the heart of a New York spring, with peonies peaking from late May into early June. Delphinium, garden roses and stock are available through the season and fill out a garden palette like this one.
How do you keep centerpieces from blocking conversation?
Keep arrangements under about 12 to 14 inches tall, spread them down the table in small clusters instead of one large piece, and add height with slim tapers or a few airy stems that sit well above eye level.
